More Than a Training Program.

Presented through a collaboration with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy, MTM The Future Today provides the tools and training necessary to integrate MTM services in the community pharmacy workflow.

MTM The Future Today Mission:

The mission of MTM The Future Today is to impact pharmacy practice by delivering a patient-centered, team-based protocol for providing Medication Therapy Management services in the community pharmacy. Educational activities aim to increase efficiency and completion rates of Medication Therapy Management services, with a focus on integrating pharmacy technicians in MTM services, improving patient outcomes, and increasing quality of pharmacist provided care.

MTM The Future Today Goals:

  • Inspire pharmacy teams to take an active role in assessing the quality of care provided by their pharmacy through evaluating EQuIPP scores, providing effective Medication Therapy Management services, and practicing Clinically Minded Verification techniques.

  • Engage pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in a team-based practice model for completing Medication Therapy Management services in the community pharmacy.

  • Provide practical approaches to delivering patient-centered Medication Therapy Management services within the community pharmacy workflow under the MTM The Future Today protocol.

MTM The Future Today Training Objectives:

Section 1 Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the relationship between Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services, EQuIPP scores, and Star Ratings

  • Navigate the EQuIPP platform, define each measure of quality listed on the platform, evaluate pharmacy performance for each measure, and identify patient outliers

  • Define Medication Therapy Management, Comprehensive Medication Review (CMR), and Targeted Medication Review (TMR)

  • Explain the pharmacy technician protocol, documentation and billing procedures for completing CMR and TMR services

  • Prepare accurate patient folders for Medication Therapy Management services, including both CMR and TMR services

  • List the roles of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in the Medication Therapy Management workflow

  • Identify Medication Therapy Management tasks that can and should be completed by the pharmacy technician

  • Utilize the MTM The Future Today protocol and the team-based approach to decrease time demands for completing Medication Therapy Management services

  • Demonstrate ability to complete CMR and TMR through guided case studies, by identifying case type, preparing forms for patient folders, understanding goals of the services, and documenting services appropriately

Section 2 Learning Objectives:

  • Identify drug-drug and drug-disease interactions common to Medication Therapy Management cases

  • Apply therapy guidelines and recommendations specific to disease states common to MTM cases, including diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, heart failure, asthma, and COPD

  • Evaluate a patient’s immunization history to identify recommended vaccinations based on their age, medical conditions, and current evidence-based guidelines

  • Demonstrate Clinically Minded Verification techniques by viewing a patient’s medication history and identifying possible medication issues

  • Explain the pharmacist protocol and clinical decision making components for completing CMR and TMR services

  • Investigate medication therapy issues common to MTM cases and demonstrate ability to apply knowledge to MTM services through guided cases studies

Home-Study

The MTM The Future Today home-study section “Introduction to MTM” defines MTM services, including CMR and TMR services, and provides information on requirements and goals for completing each type of service. Introduction to MTM also introduces the MTM platforms, Outcomes and Mirixa. This section of the home-study describes how MTM cases are identified inside the platforms and how the services are reimbursed by payers.

MTM The Future Today is the complete team-based training program designed for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The live training session features an in-depth look at Star Ratings and EQuIPP scores. During this session, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians will learn how to shift their focus beyond MTM completion and understand the relationship between pharmacy reimbursements and the effective completion of MTM services. MTM The Future Today is driven by pharmacy technicians. Under the new protocol, all non-clinical activities are shifted to technicians and the trained pharmacy technicians take control of the MTM program. This design gives pharmacists more time to focus on patient interactions and clinical activities that only the pharmacist can complete. The pharmacy technician protocol for MTM services is covered in detail during the morning section, followed by hands-on patient case activities that give pharmacy technicians an opportunity to practice their new skills.

After lunch, the disease state guidelines review provides participants with updates on disease states common to MTM services. This review focuses on delivering information applicable to MTM services, highlighting information that will be useful when completing both CMRs and TMRs. Pharmacists are then introduced to applying clinically minded verification techniques in their every-day pharmacy practice. Next, the pharmacist MTM protocol is presented. After introducing the pharmacist protocol, the training concludes with patient cases designed to guide pharmacists through MTM services and allows the pharmacists to apply the information they have learned.

Live Training Session

The live training is only half of what makes this program work. The protocol manuals that are given after completion of the training are crucial to making the program a success. The manuals provide special forms created specifically for use by technicians and pharmacists under this protocol. These forms are necessary tools that improve the efficiency of the MTM process and streamline documentation and billing. Together with the live session, these forms are what set MTM The Future Today apart from other MTM training programs. Pharmacists and technicians leave the training with a clear, practical “how to” for the implementation of MTM in the pharmacy workflow and all of the tools necessary to provide effective MTM services in any size community pharmacy.
